San Carlos, Sonora - Where the Desert Meets the Sea
Driving to San Carlos, Sonora, is easy, safe and fast. San Carlos is a close escape from the ordinary. You can leave Nogales, AZ in the morning in your car, RV or pulling your trailer and have your feet in the sand on San Carlos' white sand beaches that afternoon. Driving the 261 Miles to San Carlos from Nogales, Sonora could only take you about 4.5 hours, if you don't stop in Hermosillo.
San Carlos (just above Guaymas) is noted for its majestic views of stark desert coming to an abrupt halt at the deep blue bays of the Gulf of California. You will find RV parks, hotels in all price ranges and restaurants serving everything from fresh-caught seafood to find dining.
San Carlos boasts a large sport fishing fleet. You can fish for marlin and sailfish among other in the Gulf of California between Sonora and Baja California. Scuba divers also like the view underwater. And beach-goers just like the view.

You do not need a car permit (not even the Sonora Only permit) just to drive to San Carlos. You do, however need an FMT or immigration permit. This is easily obtained at the 21 kilometer checkpoint just south of Nogales, Sonora and Nogales, AZ.
You will need a passport to get back into the USA, so just use that to get your tourist card. And please remember to surrender that tourist card before you leave Mexico.
